Genital
Warts
Genital warts (Also called: Condylomata
acuminate, Venereal
warts) are a sexually
transmitted disease (STD) caused by the human
papillomavirus (HPV). The warts are soft, moist, pink or
flesh-colored cauliflower-like bumps. You can have one or
many of these bumps. In women, the warts commonly occur in
or around the vagina, on the cervix or around the anus. In
men, genital warts are less frequent but might appear on
the tip of the penis, near the anus, or between the penis
and the scrotum..
You can get genital warts during oral,
vaginal or anal sex with an infected partner. Proper
usage of latex condoms greatly reduces, but does not
completely eliminate, the risk of catching or spreading
HPV. Penetration
does not have to take place for a person to be infected
with genital warts.
Presently there are over twenty
million people infected with STD’s in the United States alone.
There are over one million new cases per year, with
another estimated one million that are unaware that they are
infected, because they dont have any genital wart
symptoms.
Genital
warts vary in size and may even be so
small that you can't see them. They can lead to cancer of
the cervix in women or cancer of the penis in men.The
warts might vanish on their own. If not, your health care
provider can treat or remove them. The virus stays in
your body even after therapy, so warts can come
back.
